For a foreign visitor to the United States or a recent immigrant, finding medical insurance without the benefits of a group arrangement is difficult to find. If you are a non-US citizen or not a permanent resident of the United States, the only available type of medical insurance is called travel insurance. Travel Insurance is temporary coverage designed to provide health reimbursement for the unexpected illness or injury while traveling outside one's country of origin.
These plans can be affordable and easy to apply for because they do not require that a person disclose any known medical conditions. They may also provide additional benefits including emergency evacuation and repatriation, accidental death and limited trip interruption. Premiums are based on age, length of coverage or time in the U.S. and the benefit design chosen (deductible selected).
However, because travel insurance is intended to cover the unexpected illness they have many exclusions including coverage for any known or pre-existing conditions, vision or pregnancy coverage, routine care or care for a mental condition.
If you have a parent or relative coming to the U.S. from another country and are interested in looking into travel insurance for them, please contact us at info@lhui.com
