THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT INDIVIDUAL HEALTH INSURANCE

  • Insurance is a state regulated industry. Each state has different rules regarding individual health insurance coverage, application procedures and access to coverage. In order to assist or place insurance an insurance agent and/or broker must be duly licensed in each state and become familiar with each state's rules.

  • An individual application is required for each person applying. No money is usually required as part of the application process. A person is expected to be a US citizen or have permanent legal status in the US to apply. They must also be a resident of the county/state in which they are applying.

  • Rates for coverage are based on a persons' age and smoker/nonsmoker status. Every family member will be rated based on these parameters.

  • If a person is not eligible for an individual plan due to time constraints a short term medical plan may be an option. These can cover a person up to 12 continuous months.

  • Along with the application a health risk questionnaire may be required. There are certain exceptions to this; however for most first time applicants, the health questionnaire is needed. Depending upon one's health status, a person may be deemed ineligible for individual health coverage and offered an opportunity to apply for insurance through the State Health Insurance Pool.

  • Individual plans are not intended to cover all medical conditions but they do cover the majority of health needs including professional office visits, hospitalizations, emergency care and prescription needs. Some plans cover maternity. Most plans do not cover mental health or chemical dependency claims. Most carriers utilize a network of preferred providers.

  • All health plans have waiting periods for pre-existing conditions. This waiting period can be waived with proof of other coverage within limits (specifically exhaustion of COBRA). Most waiting periods are between 9-12 months.
